Resources for Ethnicity/Race and Crime in United States
Statistics collected by the United States on crime is done through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The UCR collects arrest data on 28 offenses, as described in their Offense Definition.

Persons Arrested

The Persons Arrested statistic, collected through the UCR program, counts one arrest for each separate instance where individuals are arrested, cited, or summoned for an offense. It is important to note that this data only shows the number of times persons are arrested as reported by law enforcement agencies. Tables that specifically details with race are tables 43, 49, 55, 61, and 67. The statistics are detailed and the ethnicity/race it collect arrests are for: White, Black, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and Asian or Pacific Islander. Prior to 2014, the categories for race included these four, and the latest statistics available for Person Arrested is 2012.

Hate Crime Statistics

The Hate Crime Statistics falls under the Hate Crime Statistics Act, where the Attorney General acquires data each year about crimes that manifest because of prejudice based on race, gender and gender identity, religion, etc. The hate crime statistics is data collected regarding criminal offenses that were motivated by the offender’s bias against race, gender, disability, ethnicity, etc. The data for this survey include data for both offenders and victims.

Law Enforcement Officers Killed & Assaulted

The Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted is data on officers feloniously or accidentally killed and officers that were assaulted while performing their duties. The current data collected related to race include race and sex, and race, age group, and sex. This survey is collected annually, and the most recent data available is for 2014.

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) Series is conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The survey was designed to develop detailed information about victims and consequences of crime, and to obtain the number and types of crimes not reported to police. The survey interviewed all persons 12 years of age and older. The most recent survey available is the 2014 survey.

The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is based on the UCR program, administered by the FBI. This survey is based on the information submitted by participating law enforcement agencies. The survey contains detailed microdata on aspects of crime incidents, administrative, arrests, offenses, victims and offenders. The microdata segments included in this guide are for the victim, offender, and arrestee.
